Of billionaire weddings and the ethics of obscene wealth

On the topic of billionaires - who I don’t think should exist - some thoughts about Taylor Swift with Mackenzie Scott as a benchmark.

worth 36 billion after her divorce to Bezos.

Donated 26 billion in seven years.

Is currently worth 31.2 billion.

At about the same starting point Taylor Swift had $360 million.

In seven years, she paid out nearly 70% of her starting wealth as well.

She’s now worth 2 billion.  Her money and investments are also making money.

I am not a swifty. I love some of her music but that’s besides the point.

I see similarities in her and Mackenzie Scott that shame the terrible oligarchs destroying our country.

The frustration played out in Absolute Green Arrow as the Green Arrow killer goes after the Epsteins of that world.

I doubt this survives.

So what to do about an overly extravagant wedding. 

What percent of a net worth does the average American spend on a wedding?

A lot. It’s a societal extravagance.

All I’m trying to do is add subtext and start a discussion. That much wealth is obscene.

That much philanthropy should be lauded.

And if I can’t change the world, I’ll pause judgment for people I think are doing good.
